Total float, also called slack, is the number of days a task can slip without moving the project's finish date. Tasks on the critical path have zero total float.

It is calculated as the latest a task can start minus the earliest it can start (or the same for finish dates), from a forward and a backward pass through the network.

Total float belongs to a chain, not only a task: tasks in a row share it, so if the first uses some, there is less left for the rest.

Worked example

TaskDurationDepends onScheduledTotal floatAfter the delay
1. Plan3 daysNoneDays 1 to 30 daysUnchanged
2. Build5 days1Days 4 to 80 daysUnchanged
3. Write docs2 days1Days 4 to 53 daysDays 4 to 9
4. Release2 days2, 3Days 9 to 100 daysDays 10 to 11

The delay: Write docs takes 4 days longer.

Write docs has 3 days of total float. A delay of 4 days uses all of it and passes the remaining 1 day on: Release now finishes on day 11 instead of day 10.

Free float

Free float is the number of days a task can slip without delaying the earliest start of any task that depends on it.

Critical path

The critical path is the longest chain of dependent tasks through a project.

Delay propagation

Delay propagation is the way a delay on one task moves the tasks that depend on it, directly or through a chain, until slack in the plan absorbs it or it reaches the project's finish date.

See it on your own plan

Depentra calculates every date, link and float in your plan and shows what moves when something slips.
