Importing a plan from Excel or CSV
Bring a plan in from Excel, CSV, MS Project, Smartsheet, Jira, monday.com, Asana, Trello, Planner or Google Sheets -- and undo it in one step.
Where to start
Choose New project, then Import a spreadsheet -- or Import on the Projects page. Drop a .xlsx or .csv file, or choose one. The file is read in your browser; nothing is saved until you import.
From another tool, export first: MS Project (Save As, Excel Workbook), Smartsheet (Export to Microsoft Excel), Jira (Export Excel CSV), monday.com (Export board to Excel), Asana (Export CSV), Trello (Export as CSV), Planner (Export plan to Excel), Google Sheets (Download as .xlsx or .csv). The upload step lists these too.
Mapping and checking
Each column is matched to a Depentra field from its header -- Task Name, Start, Finish, Duration, Predecessors, Owner, Status, % Complete and so on. Change any match, or set a column to Do not import. Only the task name is required.
The check step lists every problem with its row: missing names and finishes before starts are skipped; unreadable dates, unknown statuses, predecessors not in the file and owners who are not project members are warnings. Download the list as a CSV. Dates can be day-first or month-first (decided per column), Excel dates, or written out; predecessors can be written the MS Project way, such as 3FS+2d.
Importing, and undoing it
The import is one step: every row goes in, or none do. It is recorded as one change, so Undo import on the result screen -- or Restore in Activity, Changes, filtered to Imports -- takes all of it back. A project the import created then moves to Recently deleted.
Into a project that already has tasks, imported tasks get new numbers after the ones it has, and their predecessor links move with them; a number is never reused.
